Food as medicine: an IG Chat with DR. Lauren Powell

Over on our Instagram channel, we've been having fascinating chats with skincare experts on a range of intriguing topics! This week our Brand Director, Custodio D'Avo sat down with Dr. Lauren Powell, The Culinary Doctor, to talk all about answering the question: how can better food lead to better skin?


1. Certain Foods Trigger Inflammation in the Body

Sugary and processed foods are not doing us - or our skin - any favors! If you read the ingredients label and you can't decipher 10 of them, this is an indicator of how processed your food is and how inflammatory it will be to your system. 

Not all meat is created equal. That includes the processed meat. I don't necessarily advocate for a specific diet, but I say what you put in your body should be very high quality...How qualitative is a burger of 2 dollars?

2. When in Doubt, Eat the Rainbow

Dr. Powell recommends including three colors on your plate when possible to ensure diversity of food in your meals and in your nutritional intake. Think of fruits and vegetables with vibrant hues to switch things up and make it easier to incorporate whole foods into your diet.

3. Fats (Can Be) our Friends!

It's a smart idea to incorporate omega 3 fatty acids into your diet. They help support the production of collagen, the protein that gives our skin the plump and youthful look we're striving for. Good examples of foods with Omega 3 fatty acids include salmon, mackerel, sardines, chia seeds, avocados, walnuts, and more.

4. Hydration is Critical for Healthy Skin and Hair

Did you know hair and skin are made from the same cells? Everybody's hair is different, but it's important to keep hydration status in mind. Stay hydrated and remember, healthy roots are critical for healthy hair, so that means maintaining your scalp health, too.
